  • This ring here is typically early Art Deco, simple yet effective, with a geometric design. It was hand crafted around 1925 in England by H. Samuel Ltd, with the main body made of 18 carat yellow gold, topped with a fine layer of platinum – this involved impeccable skill (it is hallmarked ‘18CT’ and ‘PLAT’ on the inside of the shank). The maker’s mark ‘H.S’ in an elongated octagonal cartouche is also on the inside of the band along with an item number which looks like 3329 but the first number is nearly rubbed out (please see photo). Set within the geometrically engraved triple daisy are 9 bright old cut diamonds, totaling approximately 0.13 carats. The setting edges show mille-graining - a technique typically used between 1900 and 1940 - and these are slightly rubbed, consistent with it’s age and an indication that this ring was adored by its previous owner. The shoulders are tapered, a delicate finish to the ring’s design. The underside gallery is charming, interspersed with cheniers (tube-like structures), and precisely curved to fit perfectly around the finger. This also allows the ring to sit flush to the hand, just 3.08 mm off the finger – so the two become a tranquil one. The underside of the bezel is neatly finished off including all drilled diamond holes.

    H. Samuel Ltd began its existence in 1862 when a lady named Harriet Samuel took over her father in law’s clock making business in Liverpool, England. She started the production of jewellery in conjunction with watches, moved the business to a well known street in Manchester’s city centre and opened more shops all over the Greater Manchester area. Then in 1912, due to immense success and the need to expand, the company moved to Birmingham. H. Samuel Ltd had two maker’s marks – one registered in March 1887 and one in October 1917. The one stamped on this ring is of the latter type. H. Samuel Ltd continues it’s jewellery making today and is found in most British large towns and cities.
